Harper pays tribute to Sir Bobby Robson

The Evening Chronicle has reported that Steve Harper has paid tribute to Sir Bobby Robson for turning the club around.

76 yr old Sir Bobby Robson

Sir Bobby Robson took over from Ruud Gullit when Newcastle was at the bottom of the Premier League back in 1999.

Steve Harper, who was the club back then, saw the whole turnaround process.

"He turned the club around. He came in at a time when we were struggling. We were bottom of the league and I just remember him coming in and how infectious he was. His character and personality was tremendous and the lads really responded well to it. You could see the determination in him when we lost our first game against Chelsea to what he will tell you was a dodgy penalty. You could see the fire in him that day and his determination to succeed and just by seeing how upset he was by it."

"Then in his first home game I had recovered from an elbow injury I’d had. He put me in and I remember it well against Sheffield Wednesday. They actually started the game quite well in the first 10 minutes or so. But the atmosphere inside the place was unreal and when we got the first goal the place just took off. To win 8-0 at any time is fantastic, but to do that in your first home game was great."

"Sir Bobby took the time that was needed to sort the place out and we steadily moved up the league for a few years. Then we finished third, fourth and fifth which seems a million miles away now. But it shows you what he achieved. Those Champions League nights were very special."

I started supporting Newcastle just before Ruud Gullit's ill fated reign, and I clearly remember how Sir Bobby Robson turned our club around. He brought Newcastle out of our the relegation zone, and into the Champions League.

Furthermore, he had an excellent hand in the transfer market, something that has not been seen in Newcastle since his days as manager.

"He was very good in the transfer market. He brought in young and athletic players who were quick. It made us a very good side. People fear pace, and with Bellamy, Dyer, Jenas and Robert we certainly had that. We were great on the counter-attack and that worried a lot of teams."

We pay tribute to Sir Bobby Robson, and we hope that his testimonial will fill out the stadium. We hope that we would find someone as passionate and influential to lead Newcastle once again.
