Obafemi Martins spoke to Chronicle Live from Nigeria, stating:
"I hope I am not sold. If the club decide to sell me I have no choice but to go. But my aim is to stay and help get Newcastle promoted next season. I love living in Newcastle and there are few better places to live and play. I know the club is for sale and that is hard for the fans. Yet I hear there could be some light at the end of the tunnel eventually."
Evening Chronicle further pointed out that Oba is on "astronomical" wages, and that he has 2 years left to run on his contract, and that it will not be lost on NUFC fans that he wants to stay because of his high wage packet.
However, one must realise that there is a high demand from Italy, including Fiorentina, that wishes to purchase Obafemi Martins, and chances are the salary that he will draw will be approximately similar to his wage here at NUFC. This kid may genuinely want to stay but some of us are prejudging him.
The finances of the club may dictate the need to sell Oba, and in recent times Oba has been compared to a headless chicken by some fans. We would like Oba to stay, and hopefully he will take a reduction in his wages. After all, he has shown dedication to NUFC in the past few years, and this is what we need to get ourselves out of this hole.
