Dave Whelan has said that Owen may have lost his drive to play football at the top level, something that many Newcastle fans have seen and felt over the past season
In response to the news of the 34 page brochure handed out by Owen's agents, Whelan said,
"We haven't received the brochure, and we wouldn't be interested in him, anyway. His wages are too expensive, for one thing, and, for another, you have to ask whether he still has the urge, the bottle and the drive."
"He's looking a bit injury-prone these days, and he does love his horses. His wages will come down, but it would still be a hell of a lot for us to pay someone more than £25,000 a week."
We know that definitely Owen will not be heading to Wigan, because for someone's wages to fall from £110k to £25k a week would be nigh impossible. We also do know that Owen will not be playing for Newcastle next season, because he will be released from his contract at the end of the month.
Whelan, for all his sniping at Mike Ashley due to the rivalry between JJB and Sportdirect, has also said something that is very sensible,
"His (Roberto Martinez) knowledge of football is immense, and even if we go down next year, there's no way Roberto will be leaving this club. I want him here for the full three years of his contract, minimum, and whatever happens, he will be staying with us, that is for sure."
That is something that hasn't happened in Newcastle for a very long time. We do hope if Shearer is appointed, the new owners will stick with him through thick and thin. Because stability is what we need now in Newcastle
